State and Federal law requires a permit for the rehabilitation of all wildlife. Animal Emergency Center does not hold a Federal Migratory Bird Rehabilitation Permit, nor does it carry a Wildlife Rehabilitation Permit. Thus, AEC can only temporarily stabilize wildlife ( migratory birds or mammals) for 24 to 48 hours.
The phone numbers for wildlife rehabilitators can be found on our Wildlife Web Links page separated by counties. The phone numbers of local DNR and US Fish and Wildlife are also provided. If you want to keep the injured or orphaned wildlife, please know it is against the law and you can be fined heavily in doing so.
If a bird or small mammal is presented to AEC (AEC will not take any bats, skunks, deer/fawn or raccoons) the Client must:
B.
Pay a $30 Service Fee to AEC or the Howell Nature Center.
Temporary stabilization includes performing warming techniques, fluid therapy, nutritional supplementation and would management.
Veterinarians are allowed to euthanize any migratory bird not included in the Endangered Species Act or the Migratory Bird Act if the bird has sustained injuries requiring amputation of a leg, foot or wing at the elbow, joint or above and/or is completely blind. You must not sustain the life of any migratory bird that cannot after medical management feed itself, perch upright, or ambulate without inflicting additional injuries to itself. The bird body can be disposed of using group cremation techniques.
If the bird is included in the Endangered Species Act or the Migratory Bird Act or is a golden or bald eagle, the Department of US Fish and Wildlife must be contacted prior to any treatments above temporary stabilization or euthanasia is performed. The same applies for muted swans and all raptors. Contact a rescue agency/organization prior to any treatment.
Veterinarians are allowed to euthanize small mammals if after medical or brief surgical management they will not be able to be released into the wild.
All wildlife must be transported to a wildlife rehabilitator within 24 to 48 hours. There are no exceptions.
